Word ladder tips and strategy
A word ladder is easier once you stop guessing and start comparing. These habits shorten most ladders in Skyscrapr. Try them on today's puzzle.
Start by comparing the two words
Line up the start word and the goal word. Any letter that already matches in the same place can stay as it is, so spend your moves on the letters that differ. The number of differing letters is the least you can possibly need, and the fewest-moves number can be higher.
Use a vowel as a pivot
When you are stuck, change the vowel. BAT, BET, BIT and BUT are each one step apart, and each opens a different family of words. A vowel swap is often the quickest way into a new neighborhood.
Work backward from the goal
List the words that sit one letter away from the goal word. If you can reach any one of them, you are one move from the top. Meeting in the middle beats climbing blind.
Know the big word families
Words ending in -ATE, -ILL, -ACK or -ORE have many neighbors: in the game's word list they average 16 to 23 neighbors each, against about 11 for a typical word. A route through a crowded family is much easier to extend than one through an unusual word, so aim your climb at dense families.
Break stubborn letters one at a time
If two letters both need to change, change them in separate moves and pick an in-between word that is real. Take whichever order leaves you more choices.
Learn from the fewest-moves number
After a game, compare your route with the fewest moves. If you used more, look for the move where you could have jumped two letters toward the goal. That habit improves your next ladder more than any rule.
A longer route still counts
You get twice the fewest moves, so a winding route that reaches the goal is a win. Play it safe first, then try to beat your own best.
